Since 1993, Aaron has worked in the Information Processing Group of the Communications Architectures and Research Section at JPL, where he conducts research in data compression and error-correcting codes. Aaron led the development of the ICER image compression algorithm being used by the Mars Exploration Rovers, and he has also provided data compression consulting for several other deep space missions and instruments.  He was a co-investigator on a project to develop more effective methods of compressing stereo image pairs on future Mars rovers. Aaron is the chair of the Multispectral and Hyperspectral Data Compression working group of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS).

Aaron has served on the faculty of Caltech, where he has periodically taught graduate-level courses on data compression and error-correcting codes. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has served as a committee member for the IEEE Data Compression Conference.  Aaron has been awarded a NASA Space Act Board Award and sixteen NASA Tech Briefs for innovations in data compression and error-correcting codes. In June 2005 he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal for leading the development and implementation of the image compression system used by the Mars Exploration Rover missions. He was an interviewee in NASA's 1998 astronaut selection. Aaron's Erdos number is two.
