Jon joined the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in 1996. Since 2001, he has been the technical
supervisor of the Information
Processing Group at JPL, a group of about fifteen postdoctoral
researchers with interests in information theory, channel coding, source
coding, synchronization, networking, optical communications, and mission
support.
Jon has led the group into several new areas of research. In optical
communications, he developed new analytical tools to express and compute
channel capacity and new coding and modulation schemes with
near-capacity performance. He leads a team that is developing and
implementing a 50 Mbps decoder for these codes, to support the optical
link of NASA's Mars Telesat Orbiter mission.
He initiated and leads a program of new research in autonomous radio
receivers. With this technology, a receiver can autonomously detect and
process a signal without being told its data rate, modulation type, or
other characteristics. This is important for ground stations and
deep-space communications relays, which can be cumbersome to frequently
reconfigure manually.
Jon's group has also broken ground in several other research areas.
It invented, developed, and implemented the ICER image compression
algorithm being used by the Mars Exploration Rovers, and
continues to provide leadership in data compression to missions and
standards bodies. It also developed a new family of low-density
parity-check (LDPC) codes with unparalleled power-efficiency and
encoding/decoding simplicity, and proposed them for standardarization to
the
Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems. The group also
provides expertise in analysis and link optimization of systems using
Ka-band frequencies.
Jon is a Senior Member of the IEEE,
and has been awarded several NASA
Tech Briefs for innovations in signal processing, coding theory, and
optical communications. He received an award for technical excellence
for his participation in the Huygens Recovery Task Force, which
corrected a critical error in the design of the Cassini-Huygens
receiver. He has taught in the Deep Space Optical Communications course
at JPL.
