Biographies of authors

Jon Hamkins received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, with honors, from the California Institute of Technology in 1990, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993 and 1996, respectively. In 1996 he joined the technical staff in the Communications Systems Research Section at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, under the management of the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena. In 2001 he became the technical group supervisor of the Information Processing Group at JPL, a group of about ten researchers in several areas of channel coding, source coding, synchronization, networking, optical communications, and mission support. His research interests include information theory, source and channel coding theory, optical communication, and cochannel interference suppression.

Kenneth Zeger (S'85-M'90-SM'95-F'00) was born in Boston in 1963. He received both the S.B. and S.M. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984, and both the M.A. degree in mathematics and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1989 and 1990, respectively. He was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawaii from 1990 to 1992. He was in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as an Assistant Professor from 1992 to 1995, and as an Associate Professor from 1995 to 1996. He has been in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at San Diego, as an Associate Professor from 1996 to 1998, and as a Professor from 1998 to present. He received an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1991. He served as Associate Editor At-Large for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY during 1995-1998, as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society during 1998-2000, and is an IEEE Fellow.
